The truth about Neuro-chip: Busting the myth with facts

Not too long ago Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla unveiled the master plan of planting the coin-sized computer chip into a human brain. However, it was in the later part of the last year that he actually unveiled a pig called Gertrude with a chip in her brain. By doing so, Elon Musk demonstrated his ambitious plan to create a working brain-to-machine interface.

The foundations of this plan were laid down in 2016 with the incorporation of Neuralink. Last year, the company offered an insight into the technology it was developing. According to Elon Musk, the chip is capable of recording brain activity and stimulating it. The start-up has already applied to launch human trails with the Fitbit consisting of tiny wires. The famous entrepreneur is optimistic of using the technology for people with neural conditions to control phones or computers with their minds.

According to Musk, the technology could enable human symbiosis with artificial intelligence. He also boasted that the technology has attained some success, as it got a monkey to control a computer with its brain. The interface is expected to help cure conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, etc. The Neuralink’s price will gradually drop to a few thousand dollars, although initially it would be quite expensive, Musk stated.

It is no secret that a lot of work needs to be done, as reiterated by Elon Musk himself. However, the potential of this technology could be limitless, claims the entrepreneur.  The device comes with an all-day battery life and could be connected directly to a wearer’s smartphone, he claims. Some of the experts though believe that such a technology would be justified if used for clinical reasons, but the same would be unethical if a healthy person uses it without a medical condition.

However, other experts are of the opinion that the chip is comparable to the natural processes that emerge through evolution. While as, the remaining reiterate that the brain link-up may get the people excited, but there’s plenty of potential non-invasive solutions to help people with conditions Neuralink aims to treat or is expected to treat.

Neuralink is currently looking to recruit scientists to make the device scalable, but there is no deadline to make the device commercially available.
